AKRONVets neededAKRON: Veterans are needed for the Adopt-a-Flag and Dine with a Veteran event scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday.The event, sponsored by the Veterans Service Commission of Summit County (VSC), will take place at the VSC headquarters, 1060 E. Waterloo Road in Akron. It is supported by the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA).The program is aimed at home school and charter school students and teaches the history and importance of the military and the importance of caring for the flag by giving each student their own flag to keep.Following the presentation, veterans will meet participants and discuss their military service with them over lunch. Hot meals will be provided by the Red Cross to all attendees.Veterans of any era are welcome.If interested in volunteering, or making a reservation to attend, call David Burden at 330-643-7636.Hungry burglarAKRON: A man caught inside an Akron home early Monday ate three bananas and brewed a pot of coffee before he was arrested, police said.Paul Parker, 46, was arrested inside a Frederick Avenue home about 3:30 a.m. Police believe he cut a basement screen and broke a window to get inside.A resident told police he was awakened when Parker sat a tea cup and kettle on his bedroom nightstand. The resident, 57, and his mother, 84, told police they had never before seen Parker.Parker was found by police sitting in the living room, smoking a cigarette and sipping coffee, according to the report. When questioned by officers, Parker’s speech was slurred and he said the house once belonged to his grandfather and should be his.Parker was arrested without incident. He told police he is homeless.While searching the house to determine if any property was taken, police discovered a number of lighted candles, a banana peel in a kitchen sink, an open bag of coffee and a fresh brewed pot on the counter.Parker, who has previous arrests for burglary, was being held in the Summit County Jail.Drugs seizedAKRON: Police seized marijuana, weapons and cash inside two Akron homes targeted by robbers Monday night.At a home in the 1700 block of Treetop Trail, a 29-year-old Alliance man who came to the residence to buy drugs at about 5:30 p.m. was beaten and robbed of $260, police said.When officers arrived, they found marijuana, a pipe and a 5-year-old child inside the home with Craig Douglas, 49, inside. Douglas was arrested on charges of robbery, child endangering and possession of marijuana.Several hours later at a home in the 1300 block of Marcy Street, a woman and her two sons were confronted by three men armed with an assault rifle. The intruders fired several shots after forcing their way inside, police said.One adult son fired a shot, and the intruders left empty-handed. No one was injured. When police searched the home, they found a loaded .45-caliber pistol, more than 500 grams of marijuana and more than $2,000.Seth Kane, 20, one of the sons, was charged with illegal weapon possession and trafficking marijuana. Caipen, of Kent, an Army veteran of the Korean War; Margaret Delillo-Storey, of Canton, an Army veteran of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm and Theodore M. Stults II, of Canton an Army and Ohio Army National Guard veteran. For additional information about the hall of fame, visit www.dvs.ohio.gov.BATH TOWNSHIPLabor pactBATH TWP.: Trustees unanimously approved a one-year renewal of some of the township’s labor contracts on Nov. 7, the day before the vote on the state’s collective bargaining legislation in Senate Bill 5.The contracts for the fire union and for the police department’s employee group were renewed with no change in employee compensation and a slight increase in the township’s contribution to the employees’ health package, said Administrator Bill Snow. “This agreement extension will serve our residents well,” said Snow.The increase in the health benefits package will depend on the final numbers for the plan’s renewal, but will mirror the same percentage the township contributed based on last year’s contract.Humphrys retiresBATH TWP.: For the past 10 years, Helen Humphrys, a former Copley Township Clerk and current Copley Trustee, has been the administrative assistant in Bath. Humphrys will be retiring from that Bath post effective Jan. 1. The event — sponsored by Firefighters Local 3040 and Springfield Cares —supports the Springfield Cares Food Drive.STREETSBOROScam warningSTREETSBORO: The Streetsboro Police Department warned Tuesday of a possible scam.In an email to the media, the department said it has received information from some concerned residents that they had received phone calls from individuals identifying themselves as being affiliated with Streetsboro police and requesting donations to the Shop-with-a Cop program organized each Christmas.“We want all our residents to know that our department or anyone affiliated with our department does not solicit donations over the phone,” Lt. Darin Powers wrote. “If anyone received such a call, we would like for them to contact our department at 330-626-4976 and provide us with caller ID information if it is available.”SUMMIT COUNTYColopy resignsAKRON: A Green councilman has resigned from his public job as a rehab specialist with Summit County.James Colopy, who had worked for the county since 2007, had been suspended for three days in September for excessive tardiness, sick leave abuse and neglect of duty. He had been suspended three times since September 2010, according to personnel records.He resigned shortly after a Beacon Journal story last month about his latest suspension. His last day was Nov. 4.“While I have greatly enjoyed the work I have done for the county and truly appreciate all the opportunities I have been provided, I have decided to pursue work in the private sector,” Colopy wrote in his resignation letter, which was released Tuesday after a public records request by the newspaper.
